Tips for choosing batteries for vapers

You’re probably familiar with the common AA and AAA batteries used in household appliances. E-cigarettes use larger, more powerful lithium ion batteries .

This is why it is important to understand battery safety . If you frequently use a vape device with removable batteries, you should read this article.

Battery cover

If you are buying pre-wrapped batteries online, pay close attention to their specifications. The most common type of battery used in most vaping devices today is the 18650. You will often see these batteries labeled as being able to draw 40-70A or more. This is not possible with current battery technology.

You can also get batteries with capacities up to 8000 mAh or more. Basically, the higher the battery rating, the longer it can run.

Be sure to do some research on batteries before you buy these. Read or look at the description and make sure you buy your batteries from a reputable store.

Safety first

There are some long-time vapers in the community who like to push the limits of their batteries without understanding the dangers involved. There are many threads on the forums documenting these experiences and advising on how to be safe when using batteries, especially with older and damaged batteries.

One of the common examples is someone will say, I built a 0.08 ohm coil and had no problems. The problem with this kind of advice is that it pushes the battery past its limits. And just because someone hasn’t had any problems, doesn’t mean it will stay that way. The smartest thing to do is start safe and increase as you feel you need more wattage. Learn and understand ohm’s law to understand its importance when vaping.

Choose the right battery type

The two most important indicators to evaluate a battery are current intensity and mAh index.

If you like to build low resistance coils and vape at high wattages, you should use a battery with high amperage, such as a 30A battery.

On the other hand, if you build high resistance coils and vape at low wattages, you don’t need a high amperage battery. Instead, you can use a high capacity, low amperage battery, so you can vape for longer.

So it can be said that the criteria when choosing your battery should be mAh index and current intensity.

Distinguishing between Pluse Rating and Continuous Rating

Here's what you need to know when looking at the battery's amperage rating, there are two types: continuous (discharge continuously) and pulse (discharge over a period of time).

Continuous is the one you should use. Many vapers mistakenly believe that they should use Pulse, because when vaping we usually only discharge the battery in a few seconds instead of continuously. This is a big misconception.

The biggest problem with pulse only is that there is no way to measure it accurately because there is no industry standard for testing battery discharge times per second. One manufacturer may rate theirs per second, while another may rate it in milliseconds.

Understanding battery leaks and explosions

Batteries leak when the internal temperature reaches 260-300 degrees Fahrenheit. When batteries leak, they can spray hot liquid and toxins. Leaks can happen when the battery is shorted or overheated. If you see signs of a leaking battery, immediately turn off your phone and wait about 30 minutes to make sure it doesn't explode.

The battery explosions you see on YouTube are called thermal runaway. This happens when the battery suffers extreme damage like a severe short circuit.

One of the most common reasons for a battery to short circuit is when someone puts a lithium ion battery in a backpack, pocket, or purse. If the two ends of the battery touch metal, the battery will short circuit and potentially generate heat, which can lead to a fire or explosion.
